Types of job for Language Teachers

Spanish Public Schools
Requires the passing of major examinations (oposiciones) making it difficult and time consuming for newly arrived teachers.

Academy / Private Language School
Open throughout the day, they offer a good opportunity for Language Teaching work in Barcelona. Though working a full schedule, some can leave little time to fully relax and socialize during the week. Students can range across all
ages. But some schools concentrate on afternoon and evening after school language courses.

‘In-Company’
Language Courses in English and Spanish, at a Business level or lower, for classes made up of employees of a company. Either, on behalf of the company or via an agency offering Language Courses to Businesses in Barcelona. Language Courses may be Starter Language Courses for many students or as a one to one personal spanish or English Language Tutor for a company executive or director.

This role requires more travel than working from one location within a Barcelona Language School, but the pay is sometimes more and expenses may be covered for visiting companies in Barrios (neighborhoods) further from Barcelona City.

In Company English or Spanish Language Teachers may need to work during early mornings, lunch times (siestas) and evenings, where companies aim to avoid disrupting employees during working hours. In-Company teachers often need to be reliable and able to work alone.

Private classes (clases particulares)
A professional English or Spanish teacher may choose to be self employed. However they may need to compete with low cost cheap language teachers, charging not more than minimum wage. Especially from Non EU teachers without visa. Adverts for Cheap English and Spanish Courses are not for everyone. Enabling a Good Barcelona Language Teacher, with Professional Qualifications and references, to concentrate on Top Class Private Language Lessons. At rates of 10€ to 20€ and possibly above. Especially in Barcelona City.

Summer Work

All Types of Job for English and Spanish Teachers, may allow for other work in the summer (subject to the terms of your full time teaching employment). During the periods the teaching Industry is quiet.

Summer camps for kids, and sometimes adults, may offer English and Spanish Lessons in a fun and sometimes exiting environment. Away from the city. This can be short language courses, of one day or for a week (or longer).

The Language Assistant Program
(Part Time : 20 hours maximum or the current limit, or less)

Public schools throughout Spain are provided with English Speaker University students, acting as assistants to their normal English Tutor, working under a Spanish student visa. It is an effort to offer English and cultural lessons from a Teacher originating from an English speaking country. Some Spanish may be necessary, if competition is high and they get teachers applying for the part time jobs. You may not necessarily be able to teach in a Spanish City of your choice, but can give your preferences.

Running from October to May, the role can be varied, as offering an insight into the nuances of the English Language is the goal. Employed part Time by the Spanish government with a teaching contract and student visa can be the first step into the best teaching positions and future job opportunities via networking. We hear it may include paid holidays during Christmas and Easter, health insurance and sometimes free passes to museums etc. Which may not make up for the lesser hours and pay, but may allow for experiencing Barcelona and working towards replacing your Student Visa with a Working Visa.
